"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while participating in aerial flight as pilot of a carrier-based fighter aircraft in Fighting Squadron TWENTY (VF-20), on a strike against a Japanese Fleet on 24 October 1944, in the vicinity of the Philippine Islands. With complete disregard for his own personal safety and in the face of intense anti-aircraft fire, he attacked and scored rocket hits on a destroyer causing consider damage. His coolness, courage and skill were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
