In the time period 13.-15.08.1943 the II./Grenadier-Regiment 481 was engaged in a series of hard defensive battles against Soviet tanks and infantry. During this time frame Obergefreiter Paul Weiß, with MG in hand, was able to repeatedly fulfill his duty in separating the Soviet infantry from their tanks. In this time he calmly let the tanks roll over his position, which were then quickly shot up by supporting Sturmgeschütze. For his bravery in these battles and the contribution to victory this provided, he was awarded the Iron Cross First Class and subsequently the Knight's Cross.
