Biography

After the Second World War, Paul Markgraf served in the Eastern German Peoples Army, reaching the rank of Oberst.

On the 22.11.1944, during the course of a German attack against Hill 198.4, Oberleutnant Markgraf and elements of his Pz.Jäg.Abt. thrusted against a Soviet cavalry brigade that was trying to achieve a breakthrough. Despite the unfavourable terrain conditions he and his men wiped out the enemy in a hard-fought night action, and Hill 198.4 was subsequently captured along with tank support. Oberleutnant Markgraf would later receive the Knight’s Cross for his tactical success on this day.
