During the fighting in the Roer-Inde triangle, Feldwebel Tabel showed himself to be an exceptional warrior. In the ruins of the village of Schophoven he and his decimated platoon were engaged in bitter house fighting, during which they were able to hold their ground long enough for friendly forces to retreat over the Roer river to the Westwall. For his actions here Tabel was decorated with the Knight's Cross.
