Jelle Boersma lived in Katlijk (now part of the municipality of Heerenveen). He was born on 17 February 1910, the son of Fritske Boersma (31 May 1880, Oosterzee - 2 September 1940, Oosterzee) and Antje Dijkstra (7 October 1883, Oldelamer - 30 July 1914, Heerenveen). He was married to Mettien Visser (9 September 1918 - 15 July 1999, Katlijk). The couple had two children, Frits and Antje. Jelle Boersma was a cattle farmer by profession. During World War II, he was a member of the resistance, belonged to the reception team for dropped weapons and took care of their distribution. He was arrested by the SD on 23 January 1945 at his farm and then transferred to the SD stronghold Crackstate in Heerenveen. There he was severely beaten. Boersma was shot along with nine others in the yard of the Schotanus family. This was done in retaliation for the shooting of German Revieroberwachtmeister Paul Platt (28 June 1910) and SS-Unterwachtmeister of the Wasserschutzpolizei Foppe Kootstra (15 February 1919 Emmen) on 15 March 1945 in Doniaga. The Schotanus farm was then set on fire. It was rebuilt in 1948.
