Citation:
"Distinguished himself by courageous conduct against the enemy during the period from May 10 to 14, 1940, as a battery officer with the Third Battery Anti-Aircraft Artillery in Vlaardingen. In particular, on May 10, 1940, under machine-gun fire from an enemy aircraft, which stalled on the battery no fewer than seven times, after which one of the guns suddenly stopped participating in the gunfire. After his example and intervention had caused the gun to resume firing, he resumed command at the battery post. Through his courageous, well-considered, calm, and inspiring actions, he also contributed significantly to the fact that a large number of enemy aircraft were shot down by this battery."
