    Biography

The most important man of the resistance on easten Java was the Indonesian-Dutch Willem Adam Meelhuyzen, a captain in the KNIL.
His aircraft was shot down during the Japanese invasion. He survived and went into hiding in Suruabaya. There, he established a resistance movment, dressed as an Indonesian using the alias Tahir. He got help from his sister-in-law Godie Meelhuyzen. He called his organization Corsica. The widely dispersed resistance on Java — gueriilla actions, sabotage, espionage — had to be coordinated and Tahir also wanted to prevent a power vacuum to originate at the liberation. But the resistance remained isolated, the Indonesian population wanted nohing of it. Tahir was arrested. On December 22, he committed suicide in his cell in Surabaya in order to prevent betraying others when he would be tortured. The entire resistance movement was disbanded.
