Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Sepoy (Private)
Unit:
13th Frontier Force Rifles, Indian Army
Awarded on:
August 2nd, 1945
Recommendation:
"At Meiktila on the night of 22/23 March 1945 Sepoy Abdur Rehman at about 23.30 hours was called by the sentry on his gun post. Together they observed the enemy who approached then in moonlight. The enemy`s intention became obvious because they were seen carrying a MMG. Immediately and on his own initiative Abdur Rehman took two grenades, and without a thought for his own personnel safety went out alone in search of the gun. He spotted it`s exact position and threw his first grenade and saw the crew go down either killed or wounded. The enemy on seeing him opened intense fire while Abdur Rehman waited to throw his second grenade to make quite sure that the crew were out of action. All this time the enemy kept up intense and accurate fire making it necessary for Abdur Rehman to crawl back the 70 yards to his post. Half an hour later the enemy again approached his post and challenged him in Urdu. Seeing that they were in strength he opened fire. At first light the area in front of his post was littered with dead, for throughout the night under intense mortar and grenade discharger fire Abdur Rehman by his cool courage under difficult conditions helped break up a very determined enemy attack. Out of a count of 220 dead he had accounted for 30 and single handed had knocked out an enemy MMG, his work and devotion to duty was beyond all praise."
