Leendert Gerardus van Beugen from Sleeuwijk was skipper on the tugboat Leviathan. In the last winter of the war he made 4 or 5 crossings through the Biesbosch to liberated territory.

"Distinguished himself through courageous action against the enemy by voluntarily organising, together with others, the courier line between occupied and liberated Netherlands, which was of such importance to the Dutch Government's Intelligence Bureau, between November 1944 and 5 May 1945, travelling by rowing boat and canoe, under constant threat from enemy posts and patrol boats, which fired at every suspicious sound in the dark, from Sliedrecht through the Biesbosch to Lage Zwaluwe, transporting a large number of reports and messages that were important for the Dutch Government and for the Allied war effort."
