Citation:
"He distinguished himself through his actions against the enemy during the resistance in the Arnhem area.
He enlisted as a conductor on freight trains for the Dutch Railways and, in this role, disrupted rail traffic as much as possible. He blew up several railway lines outside residential areas in the Arnhem area.
He also rendered considerable service on September 17, 1944, and the following days, providing assistance to British airborne troops near Oosterbeek. He then returned clandestinely to Arnhem, risking his life to obtain weapons from this deserted city. There, he took full responsibility for his capture, resulting in the release of five of his employees and couriers after being held captive for several weeks."
