To Captain Josselyn, R.N.

"Dear Captain,
I should like to report to you the action af Leading Seaman Howard in saving my life at the time of the sinking of our ship in your convoy.
I was sleeping in my cabin on the Dining Room Deck (three decks below the boat-deck) when the explosion occured. Howard came into my cabin and led me out into the passage. He looked round and saw there was no escape that way. Then he got me up the porthole of the passage and dragged me through. By then the deck was almost vertical. It was just I was half through the port-hole that the ship went down. He continued to pull me through and got me free. His calmness throughout and again afterwards on the overturned life boat, onto which we climbed, was very remarkable; and he helped to lash boats and boats together, and to pull out more survivors. I should like you to know if this as probably nobody else is in a position to give a time account of his actions."
