Biography

Bockus fle the Stinson L-5 over the jungles of central Burma rescuing wounded men and dropping supplies to the jungle columns of Wingate’s expedition but also flying Dakotas to bases in China.

Enlisted 14 October 1941. Promoted LAC, 11 April 1942. Posted to No.20 EFTS; graduated 19 June 1942 and posted next day to No.8 SFTS; graduated and commissioned 9 October 1942. To “Y” Depot, 23 October 1942; to RAF overseas, 27 October 1942. Promoted Flying Officer, 9 April 1943. Posted from Headquarters, Special Forces, Southeast Asia to Third Tactical Air Force, 24 July 1944. To No.67 Squadron, 27 July 1944, serving there to June 1945. Promoted Flight Lieutenant, 9 October 1944. Repatriated 16 August 1945. Retired 29 October 1945.

"This officer joined his present squadron in October 1943 and since then he has flown on a large number of operational sorties. On many occasions his aircraft was forced down in the Burmese jungle but each time he evaded capture by the enemy and returned to our lines. By his consistent keenness and efficiency Flight Lieutenant Bockus has set an inspiring example to the other pilots in his squadron."
