"One night in Augus 1944 this officer captained an aircraft detailed to attack BRUNSWICK. Shortly after crossing the enemy coast an enemy fighter was encountered. The enemy closed with all guns firing and the bomber was struck. Cannon shells pierced the tailplane ,fuselage and mainplane A petrol tank was punctured and other damage sustained, F/O Cowden manouvered with much skill and his gunners drove off the attacker. He afterwards went on to the target and executed his attack,This officer displayed great skill and courage throughout this spirited sortie."
