Awarded for his leadership accomplishments during the 2nd Battle of Izyum. During this time he took over leadership of the whole regiment and on 17.08.1943 was able to recapture those parts of the main line of defense that had been lost the day before, east of Dolgenkaja. On 19.08.1943 the Regiment was overrun by enemy tanks, but succeeded in beating back their infantry support in close combat. In this fight Ruge’s own I. Bataillon was able to destroy 8 T-34s in close combat.
