Awarded for his achievements as a minesweeper commander. He oversaw such missions at the mouth of the Elbe, the English channel and the Bay of Biscay. Following the Battle of France he and his units were the first to clear the coastal routes from Lorient and Brest free from Allied mines. Palmgreen also distinguished himself through the escorting of convoys and in defense against hostile torpedo planes.
