The Deutsche Nachrichtenbüro of 24.02.1945 contained the following report, which detailed how Unteroffizier Schaarschmidt received the Knight’s Cross…

“The Führer has at the suggestion of the Supreme Commander of the Luftwaffe, Reichsmarschall Göring, awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross to Unteroffizier Schaarschmidt, soldier in a Flak-Sturmregiment. Unteroffizer Herbert Schaarschmidt, born on 10.01.1920 in Zwickau, has during the battles in Hungary destroyed 8 enemy aircraft in the span of 20 days.”
