During the eight-day defense of Elisawetowka, Hauptmann Höhne and his Bataillon held the line against Soviet forces that were trying to penetrate into the assembly area of the 60. Infanterie-Division (mot), which was preparing to counterattack. In doing so Höhne prevented an enemy breakthrough towards Drashkowka and the road/railway line Konstantinowka-Sslawjansk, the latter a vital lifeline for the left wing of the 17. Armee. He would be awarded the Knight’s Cross for this achievement.
