During the time period 10.07.-29.08.1944 Oberst Holste particularly distinguished himself while leading the 4. Kavallerie-Brigade through a series of hard defensive battles, showing extraordinary bravery in every crisis that arose. His Brigade made a notable contribution towards the rescue of the retreating German units in the Pinsk—Brest-Litovsk area. For this he would be named in the Wehrmachtbericht and decorated with the Oakleaves to his Knight’s Cross.

561st Award.
Ritterkreuz mit Eichenlaub
On the 17.02.1942 Oberst Holste was present during an attack of the 1. Panzer-Division, which aimed to encircle enemy forces west of Rzhev. This particular day the Germans attacked towards Mantschalowo in terrain of limited visibility. Though his original task was to oversee the actions of his forward observer, he would intervene in the attack itself when he saw that the German infantry had been halted by the bitter enemy resistance. Oberst Holste helped the flanking thrust of the Panzers to succeed and continued to support them during their drive into the rear of the enemy forces opposite the assaulting German infantry. He would be awarded the Knight’s Cross for his actions here.
