Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Sergeant
Unit:
5h Battalion Grenadier Guards, 24th Guards Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, British Army

June 15th, 1944
Awarded for:
Operation Shingle
"During the ANZIO Bridgehead operations 5th Battalion Grenadier Guards was holding a position at CARROGETO and was heavily attacked by enemy tanks and infantry on 26 Jan 1944.

Sjt Williams was in charge of an anti-tank gun in an exposed position on the flank of the Battalion positions; he and his detachment was subjected to extremely heavy and continuous artillery and mortar fire.

This NCO's detachment succeeded in knocking out three enemy tanks and thus eliminated a dangerous threat to the Battalion's left flank, and I consider that Sjt Williams' bravery and coolness in very difficult conditions were largely responsible for this success.

Throughout the period 25 Jan - 9 Feb 1944 the conduct of this NCO has been deserving of the highest praise."
