On the 22.05.1943 a British Swordfish aircraft attacked U-752, killing the commander and the bridge watch. Leutnant Krey thus took over command of the U-Boat. However the boat was no longer able to dive, and so he ordered all hands to abandon ship. Because two British destroyers arrived quickly, Krey blew up the boat while still aboard in order to prevent it falling into enemy hands. For this selfless act he would be decorated with the Knight’s Cross.
