"M/Sgt. Joseph Johnson received a bronze star in recognition of his bravery in evacuating the bodies of Lieutenant Colonel M. A. Langley and Cpl. Russel F. Meese, driver, while under heavy German fire. Langley and Meese were fired on while traveling the road along the west bank of the Rhine near St. Goar by a German 20mm gun. Johnson also served as a litter-bearer when Langley was interned at the 3rd Army burial grounds near Stromberg, Germany."
