    "Brigadier CHARINGTON commanding the 1st Armoured Brigade. As Commander of the covering force in front of the Aliakman position, he carried out successfully the demolition programme and withdrew his force to the Monastir gap to face the German threat, when he successfully supported the covering force on that position on April 10th and following days, and finally covered the withdrawal by a spirited rearguard action. When the resistance of the Greek force in his neighborhood collapsed, he successfully extricated his Brigade in good order. He showed throughout cool and courageous leadership."
