W/C John (Jock) Forbes was killed in action on the 15th of March 1942. He was serving with No. 1401 MET Flight at RAF Bircham Newton (RAF Coastal Command) in Norfolk at the time. On the 15th he took off from RAF Bircham Newton in Spitfire PR IV (X4503) on a special Meteorological flight to Dusseldorf to gather weather data for a Bomber Command for a planned Bombing mission later than same day. On his return flight he was intercepted by a ME109 and shot down crashing near Lopikerkapel in the Netherlands and diedinstantly in the crash. He is buried at Oud-Leusden Cemetery in Amersfoort.
