On the evening of 29 May when left with a forward gun to defend the bridgehead, Sgt Smith showed great courage keeping his gun in action under heavy machine gun and rifle fire. In this action he accounted for two tanks at point blank range and held up the enemy infantry for a considerbale period, only withdrawing when large enemy forces were within 200 yds of his gun."
