Biography

Lived in Oosterbeek, Acacialaan 39. Son of labourer Jan Rietveld (24 November 1879 Giessendam – 25 February 1965 Sliedrecht) and Hendrika Wilhelmina Bernardina van de Grijp (19 May 1880 Sliedrecht – 5 September 1953 Dordrecht). Married on 8 August 1938 to Kommarina Boer (7 June 1912 Sliedrecht – 18 January 2003 Sliedrecht). The couple had two children. Widow Rietveld-Boer remarried Jan Hoeflaak (9 March 1909 – 26 March 1968). Factory worker at the rubber factory in Heveadorp. Tony Sheldon writes in “The Horror of the Night” that on 25 September 1944, two civilians from Oosterbeek were shot by German soldiers. According to the author, this probably happened accidentally to Rietveld while he was gathering wood in the woods north of Doorwerth. His name is listed on the war memorial in Heveadorp.
(1*) The death certificate lists Doorwerth as the place of death. Gerritsen mentions Heveadorp.

Reburied at the War Graves Foundation's Field of Honour in Loenen, section A, grave number 778.
