"For gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 3d Tank Battalion, 10th Armored Division, in action at Kastel, Germany, on 18 March 1945. Maneuvering his light tank to a defiladed position, Technician Fifth Grade Cumbaa, tank driver, dismounted from his vehicle and alone succeeded in putting an enemy heavy tank out of action by throwing grenades into its open hatch. His gallant achievement reflects great credit upon himself and the military forces of the United States."
