Lieutenant Nees was one of Brazil High School's best athletes and a graduate of Kansas University.

Lieutenant Nees was killed by machine gun fire as the only officer of his company during the particularly bitter battle for a high mountain ridge. He was buried on the same day he was killed, in Little Falls Cemetery, Grave 7, Row 2, Plot 1. The chaplain officiating was Chaplain Merriman. A peak was named after Lt. Nees.
