He has distinguished himself by courageous conduct in the face of the enemy as a radio operator, having been a crew member of a British bomber which had to make an emergency landing on the IJsselmeer as a result of enemy action. After reaching the Frisian coast, he went into hiding and subsequently he joined a number of agents, working in Friesland who were members of a secret Dutch intellingence service located in London. He has operated the radio equipment voluntarily and under trying circumstances until Friesland was liberated in April 1945.
