Biography

124730, Pilot Officer (Obs) John Wilfred Naden, 12 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.

Born 20 May 1912, son of shopkeeper (gents outfitters), Jonas Henry and Eliza, (nee, Hilder), Naden, of 93, Byrons Lane, Macclesfield. Wilfred had an elder brother Arthur Henry and a younger sister Hilda.
He was educated at the Mill Street and Central Schools and at the Manchester
Technical College. Then he served his Articles with Messrs John Clayton Ltd, Builders and Contractors, Sunderland Street, Macclesfield. Immediately prior to the war, he was on the staff of the Prudential Assurance Company.
Joining the R.A.F. as a volunteer on 30 June 1940. He rose to the rank of Sergeant-Observer, in which capacity he made many operational flights, and soon received his commission as Pilot Officer. He was attached to Bomber Command and took part in the four-figure raids over enemy country. It was on an operation to Duisburg, Germany, which had taken off at 00.14 hrs from Binbrook that his Wellington, Z8591, was badly damage by flak, and losing control over the Dutch coastline on the Ijsselmeer that he crashed. The crew baled out, but John died; Sunday, 26 July 1942 aged 30 years.
