"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He was with a party on the right of his company, and succeeded in preventing the enemy from working round his flank and rear, and rejoined his company without loss. He made a most gallant attempt with twenty men to reach three companies who were isolated in an enemy trench, but was forced to abandon the attempt owing to an intense hostile barrage."
