"As air gunner, Pilot Officer Crankshaw has participated in a very large number of sorties and has displayed outstanding determination and devotion to duty. One night in August, 1943, during a sortie against Berlin, his aircraft was attacked by a Junkers 88. Coolly and skilfully, Pilot Officer Crankshaw engaged the attacker and his accurate shooting caused the enemy aircraft to dive away, apparently on fire. This officer has displayed courage and confidence, setting an excellent example."
