Citation:
"He distinguished himself in Rotterdam by courageous conduct against the enemy on the morning of May 13, 1940, when he arrived at the Maas Bridge with the commander of a detachment of Marines and a preceding section had already received such heavy enemy fire, including from the northern bank of the Maas River, from an already occupied building at the Boompjes, that a light machine gun had been left behind. In particular, when the commander on site twice refused to grant him permission, in view of the swinging enemy fire, he nevertheless, after saying he wanted to assist a wounded comrade, rushed to the machine gun faster, whereupon he fell, mortally wounded."
