For having distinguished himself in combat against the enemy by enthusiastically putting himself at the disposal of the Dutch cause for the dangerous mission of opening courier routes via Belgium and France to Spain after having been dropped over occupied Holland. On March 24, 1943, however, he lost his life when the aircraft taking him to occupied Holland, was shot down over the Ijsselmeer by an enemy fighter.
