He has distinguished himself in combat against the enemy on May 10, 1940 when he, as part of 4 Company of the IV Depot Batallion Infanterie, consisting of soldiers who had been in training for just three months, had been selected to assist in retaking airbase Ypenburg which had been all but captured by the enemy and having taken part in this action in an exemplary fashion. .
In particular by fearlessly taking part in this attack with his section having to advance under heavy enemy fire across almost entirely exposed terrain, despite losses in dead and wounded up to the main entrance of the airbase and executing with total devotion the orders given to him.
Finally, when the section could not hold its ground any longer and had been ordered to retreat, for having covered the retreat of the section with his section commander until he was killed.
