"Distinguished himself through courageous action against the enemy on 10 January 1942 as commander of the undefendable captured Japanese coastal vessel ‘Mastdijn’, with the task of transporting KNIL soldiers, as well as weapons and ammunition, from Samarinda to Tarakan, during an attack by an enemy seaplane with machine guns and light bombs, he ordered his subordinates to take cover in the hold of the vessel and took the helm himself, during which attack he was fatally wounded."
