Citation:
"Distinguished himself by his actions against the enemy as a sergeant mechanic aboard the Y-63 in combat during a reconnaissance flight over the southern entrance to the Banka Strait and the Northern Brothers on 27 February 1942 against six attacking Japanese Army-97 fighter planes, one of which was shot down, a second was hit while the flying boat was riddled with bullets and he was seriously wounded in the head. After landing at sea due to lack of fuel, he managed to reach the coast of Sumatra in a rubber boat with the other crew members and, after suffering many hardships due to lack of food and water, arrived at the coast of Java in a state of complete exhaustion, where he had to stay behind in Anjer while the others attempted to reach Tjilatjap.
He was betrayed to the Japanese and taken to Serang. In 1944, he was reported missing, presumably as a result of the torpedoing of a Japanese ship that was supposed to take him to Siam."
