He has distinguished himself in combat against the enemy, serving in 2.Cie.Int.Tr. in the morning of May 10, 1940 in Rotterdam, by voluntarily joining a 10-men patrol, commanded by a sergeant, in order to delay the enemy advance from the south bank of the Meuse to the north bank. In particular as gunner of a light machine gun when a Dutch vehicle, occupied by 2 Germans approached and after the identity of the occupants had been established, immediately and successfully opening fire after which he was killed shortly after by fire from this vehicle.
