"Distinguished himself through courageous action against the enemy in the early morning of 10 May 1940, assigned to the only weak occupation of the defence object of Sluis 4 in the Juliana Canal near Borgharen (Limmel), helped repel an enemy attempt to overrun this position and finally, after inflicting heavy losses on the superior enemy forces, was killed in action."
