"Sgt Spencer served throughout the fighting in Italy with 2/5th Bn The Leicestershire Regiment. In the Gothic Line battles, owing to casualties among Officers, he commanded a platoon continuously. His personal gallantry and sound military knowledge have always been a source of inspiration to his men. He had calmly and inspiration to his men. He has calmly and skillfully led his platoon through the bitterest opposition and never failed to reach his objective. Always in the lead himself, his total disregard of personal safety and his constant determination to get the grips with the enemy have more than once led to the capture, by his platoon, of features vital to the successful Operations of this Battalion. His brilliant handling of his platoon, his solid courage and absolute dependability under the most adverse conditions have gained him the highest respect of Officers and men."
