During the fighting SW of Schrunden on 27.11.1944 the Soviets managed to penetrate the German lines in the sector of the 11. Infanterie and 31. Volksgrenadier divisions. They did so over fairly marshy terrain with strong fire support. However the I./Panzergrenader-Regiment 33 was sent to counterattack this move and after a hard fight the old German line was restored. For his role in recapturing the old positions on this day Weger was awarded the Knight's Cross.
