Second World War (1939-1945)
Generalleutnant (Major-general)
Führer XVIII. Armee-Korps
Awarded on:
October 17th, 1940
Here follows an excerpt from Speck's Knight's Cross recommendation...

"Generalleutnant Ritter von Speck has through his personal bravery and devotion to duty often decisively directed the fighting of the XVIII. Armee-Korps from 05.06.1940-08.06.1940 from the very frontline in the battle at the Chemin des Dames and during the crossing over the Aisne (east of Soissons). The Korps, as part of the 9. Armee, was the first to break through the fierce enemy defence along the Oise canal. It stormed the Chemin des Dames and, while hotly pursuing the fleeing enemy over the Aisne, was able to establish bridgeheads on the south side of the river. These successes can be largely attributed to the personal bravery and dash of the commanding general."
