Biography

Johan Bernard Roeterink was born on February 18th, 1894, as the son to Gerrit Jan Roeterink and Geertruida Stoltenborg. He married Margaretha Elisabeth ter Borg on November 22nd, 1918. The couple had four children.

Johan Bernard Roeterink was master in the Merchant Navy. He was torrpedoed in the English Channel on December 7th, 1939 by U 47 under the command of Günther Prien, when sailing with the Tajandoen of NV Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland (SMN). On August 24th, 1942 he once again was torpedoed, this time with Moena (SMN). Moena was torpedoed in the Atlantic Ocean, 100 miles of the Island Barbados, by U 162 under command of Jürgen Wattenberg.
On September 6th, 1945, Captain Roeterink was the first Captain with a ship from SMN to return to the Netherlands, the Tarakan.
