"Throughout the attacks on, and subsequent successful defence of Monte PICCOLO on 28 May L/Sgt Jones displayed at all times, the greatest coolness and resource. His P1 Comd was killed within an hour of the attack starting, and L/Sgt Jones commanded the P1 for the rest of the time. During the second German counter-attack L/Sgt Jones dashed up the ridge ahead of his P1, seized the barrel of a spandau, pulled it towards him and then turned it on the enemy, thereby saving many lives among his own P1 and killing many of the enemy."
