Citation:
"This N.C.O. was trained in this country as a sabotage instructor, and was dropped by parachute in June 1943, with instructions to organise operations and sabotage in general with the Armee Secrete in the northern part of FRANCE.
He worked in the eastern part of ZONE NORD and assisted in successful sabotage attacks against high tension cables to the North of PARIS and against the CANAL DE LA MARNE AU RHIN.
This latter attack drained seventeen kilometres of this important waterway until necessitated repairs considered likely to take six months to effect.
His most notable success, however, initiated entirely by himself, was an attack on the ammunition depot at LANGRES, reported in October 1943, 5,000 tonnes of ammunition and explosives were stored at this point, and the agent so arranged and timed the attack that 3,000 trucks full of power were blown up, 60 at a time, in a series of explosives at five minutes intervals.
Had the whole quantity been blown up at once, the town would have been annihilated. Although the town was considerably damaged 10 10 Germans killed, there were no casualties among the French population.
A report has been received confirming this attack and stating that berfore it took place, the civilian population were warned by and "unknown stranger" to evacuate the town as an areial bombardment was imminent.
In recognition of his courageous and successful work, I strongly recoomend him for the award of the DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL."
