Zolling, Ernst

Biography

Colonel I. G. Zolling was assigned as the operations officer to Panzer Gruppe Afrika
and received the German Cross in Silver on 22. 10. 1944. Colonel Zolling was one of
the most capable general staff officers of the Afrika Korps under GFM Rommel. Due to severe illness, he was evacuated during the withdrawal of the Afrika Korps from Egypt.
He was placed in the Fuhrer reserves on 23 November 1942. He returned to active duty on 15 May 1943 and was assigned as the operations officer to Supreme Command South in Rome Commanded by GFM Kesselring. He distinguished himself in this assignment and departed on 10 September 1944 for his next assignment as the operations officer for Supreme Command West under the command of GFM v. Rundstedt.
He was promoted to full colonel on 1 November 1944. Towards the end of the war, he was once again posted to Supreme Command South and eventually was captured by the US Army at war’s end.
He worked after the war for the german BND (Bundesnachrichtendienst) as a military adviser f. e. in Egypt.
