"The attack by 3 Battalion on 12th April 1945 along the line of river Santerno had the object of establishing a bridgehead. The enemy positions were very well prepared, strengthened with barbed wire obstacles and mine fields, whilst enemy flanking machine gun fire covered the river. Rifleman Janicki took part in this battle with the forward platoon of 2 Company, which had the task of establishing the bridgehead. At the moment when the attack went in the enemy opened up very heavy artillery, mortar and machine gun fire. Rifleman Janicki took no notice of this fire and was the first to cross the river, where he attacked an enemy defensive position with hand grenades and a Thompson sub machine gun. Killing one german and capturing two prisoners of war. When the enemy counterattacked he remained where he was and fought with great dash and tenacity, giving an outstanding example of great courage. Despite wounds he remained on the battle field and allowed himself to be evacuated only after this operation was completed".
