"During the battle on the Gaiana Canal on 19 April 1945, Sgt. Sarnowski was in command of a troop of Stuart Tanks, working under the command of No. 2 Squadron. This Squadron was engaged in fierce fighting with 5 Wilno Brigade, during which the tank ammunition expenditure was very heavy, Sgt. Sarnowski with two tanks brought up further ammunition to the Armoured Squadron on three occasions, despite extremely heavy fire. He personally led and set a magnificent example to the tank crews who had to load the fresh ammunition into the tanks under intense enemy fire. He throughout the battle showed great courage, initiative and devotion to duty".
