Biography

Percy was born in Stephenville, Newfoundland, on December 4, 1926 (unlike his Canadian records, which state he was born in 1924). Percy was untruthful about his age when he joined the Army. The family moved to Saint John, New Brunswick, around 1928.

My father always resented that they were put in the same regiment (Royal Winnipeg Rifles regiment) and was constantly worried and looking out for Percy, who was five years younger. My father saw Percy get shot, and after a thumb's up from Percy to my father, Dad kept on going. Dad was transferred to England after Percy's death, so there would not be a second son's death.

Percy was killed by a shell fragment in the abdomen and shock. He died on my father's birthday, April 10, 1945. He was 18 years old.

Percy was temporarily buried at Holten War Cemetery.
