Charles McCracken enlisted in the Royal Irish Fusiliers later Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, transferred to Corps of Military Police and was16/7/45 discharged.

"For most conspicuous gallantry when acting as the sole remaining Stretcher Bearer at HOLLEBEKE 27th May, 1940 and at OOSTAVERNE 28th May, 1940. In both these actions when under very heavy shell fire, he continually dressed and evacuated wounded single handed.
He showed complete disregard for his own safety and set an excellent example to the remainder of his Company."

Originally recommended for a Distinguished Conduct Medal but downgraded to a Military Medal.
