Biography

Friedrich Mayer served as driver on Tiger I #222, 2. Kompanie, schwere Panzer-Abteilung 504. The #222 was the only Tiger I tank of the unit which was evacuated from Sicily on August 17th, 1943. The tank however broke down and had to be abandoned in Calibria on August 22nd. Friedrich Mayer then went with the survivors of his unit in September to Monte Cassino to be reünited with the unit. From her he was send home to Backnang to regain strength agsain.From November 1943 until January 1944 he joined the schwere Panzer-Abteilng 504 again in Wezep, the Netherlands, where it was rebuild. In February he left the unit to join the schwere Panzer-Abteilung 506 in Belarus. After being wounded and having been on sickleave at home in Backnang, het rejoined the schwere Panzer-Abteilung 506 in August 1944 again and was with this unit part of the battles near Arnhem in September 1944. He ended the war with this unit as a mechanic.
